Sarah finished the way a person finishes when there is no clean ending left in them. The words just ran out. Then the sobbing came hard. Mikey pressed into her side. Raych had her in both arms and did not try to talk it better. She just held on.
The farmyard stayed dark and still beyond the lantern glow. Katydids. A soft tick from the cooling De Buyer. Grok’s speaker sat quiet on the table, smart enough for once not to fill the air.
Tom waited until Sarah’s breathing found a ragged rhythm. He set his cup down with care, like it mattered.
“All right,” he said. Gruff old Marine voice. Not loud. Not soft either. “You told them the house. I’ll tell them the drive.”
He did not look at anyone when he started. He looked at the dark past the barn, the way a man looks at a road he has already run once and still hates.
He had been sitting in the 2010 F-150 in his own driveway when the phone rang. Engine idling. Truck maintained the way he maintained everything that might have to save somebody. Oil. Brakes. Tires. Transmission he had rebuilt himself two years back. Old habits.
The news had been getting worse all evening. Reports sliding down I-85. People collapsing. Then attacking. His gut, the old infantry one, already knew this was no flu.
Sarah’s voice came through tight and controlled, the way he had taught her.
“Daddy. They turned. David and Mom. We’re locked in the bedroom. Mikey’s with me. They’re trying to get in.”
In the background he heard it. Wet scratching. Heavy hits on the door. A low sound that was not a man anymore.
“Keep that door blocked,” he told her. “Do not open it for anything. I’m five minutes out. I’m coming, baby.”
He dropped the phone on the seat and floored it. The V8 came up hard. He tried Ryan. Voicemail. Then Matt. Nothing. That silence rode with him like a second passenger.
Atlanta’s suburbs were already sliding. Cars smashed in yards. A woman screaming as something dragged her down in the grass. Tom swerved around a wreck and felt the F-150’s heavy frame shrug it off. The radio kept spitting panic. Avoid I-85. The Cough spreading fast.
Halfway there the sat phone buzzed. Ryan.
“Dad. It’s bad here. Real bad. They’re inside the wire. We’re holding the armory but it’s falling apart.”
Tom’s hands tightened on the wheel. “You hold what you can, son. Fix bayonets if you have to. I’m on my way to your sister right now. Sarah and Mikey. I’ll get them out.”
Gunfire behind Ryan’s voice. Then steadier for a second.
“Tell them I love them. And Matt. I couldn’t reach him either. But we’re Marines. We’ll make it. You get Sarah safe.”
The line died before Tom could answer. He tried calling back. Nothing. The ache in his chest was a living thing, but he clung to the sound of Ryan still fighting. Staff Sergeant. Good men. Still in it. He had to believe that.
Clover Lane looked almost normal when he slid to a stop. Almost. Front door hanging open. Bloody handprints on the porch.
He killed the engine, reached behind the seat, and took the Winchester Model 12 his father had handed down. Not much ammo. Enough.
He did not waste time on the bedroom door. He went into the guest room next to it, grabbed the heavy toolbox, and worked like the mechanic he was. Hammer and crowbar through drywall. Plaster dust in the air. A ragged hole in under a minute.
Sarah’s face in the opening. Pale. Streaked. Mikey right behind her.
“Out,” Tom said. “Now.”
Sarah first. Then Mikey. The pounding on the bedroom door went frantic. Tom caught one look at what had been David and Linda. Faces twisted. Eyes wrong. The Winchester did the rest. Two heavy booms. They dropped.
He grabbed the family photo off the wall and shoved it into his jacket. Then he herded them to the truck.
“Buckle in.”
Fuel good. Engine smooth. Old habits.
As they pulled away from Clover Lane the radio screamed. Atlanta falling. I-85 a slaughterhouse. Tom gripped the wheel and chose the only direction that still made sense.
“We’re not staying here. Swamp country. Apalachicola. Ochlockonee. The Okefenokee edge. Remote. Defensible. We get there. We figure the rest out.”
He tried Ryan again. No answer. Matt still nothing. But he had heard Ryan’s voice. That had to mean something.
The F-150 rolled southwest into the dark. Headlights on back roads that would feed toward the swamps. One hand near the Winchester. The other on a wheel he knew by heart.
“We stay human,” he had muttered then. “No matter what comes.”
Tom stopped talking. The farmyard took the story and held it. Sarah was still against Raych’s shoulder. Mikey had not let go of his mother. I watched Tom’s hands. They were steady now. They had not been steady on that drive, and we all knew it.
Nobody asked about Ryan or Matt. Not tonight. The names sat in the dark with the rest of the things we were carrying north.
I poured another round of coffee. The percolator was almost empty. The farmhouse and the barn kept their silence. Five miles short of Hazelhurst, the family had told the first hard truths of how it began.
Tomorrow the road would start again. Side roads. Bypass the town if we could. Find a camp that was not soaked in memory.
Tonight we let Tom’s engine finish echoing in our heads, and we stayed close.
